Breaking through barriers to learning!

August 6, 2019
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Christ the King Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall

Students who are making the transition to Star have new deadline expectations, new assignment formats, and a new online class system. Sometimes they might need a bit of help navigating all the new stuff. Before starting this year, Star will offer a one day prep program on August 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Star admin will teach students note-taking skills and time management basics. Students will also have small group sessions where they learn how to navigate NEO with helpers on hand to guide them through the initial difficulties. This seminar is designed both for new students and for returning students who sometimes have a hard time staying organized and keeping up with assignments. The seminar is $15 and will include our usual lunch - a slice of pizza, a pack of candy, and a bottle of water. (It will also include a few social breaks.)

Topics will include:

Note-taking – Which methods are most practical for a particular subject?

Study skills – What’s the best way to use my study time?

Test taking and preparation – What’s the best way to prepare for a test?

Time management – How can I keep track of all my deadlines and assignments?

Our NEO intro will cover:

  • Logging in
  • Sending a message to your teacher
  • Starting from the lessons page
  • Completing an assignment
  • The hazards of working from the assignments page
  • Taking a quiz
  • Submitting a document
  • Adding a link or image to a message or assignment
  • Using the forum
  • Finding your grades
  • Using all the resources your teacher has created for your class

Please complete this registration form and submit payment online, or you can pay at our Meet the Teacher event the evening before (August 5, 6:30 – 8 p.m.).

To get the most out of the seminar and be able to use the skills taught at home, if at all possible, please send a laptop with your student.

Mentor program

In addition to the seminar, Star will offer a mentoring program to help students who are struggling with assignment formats or NEO submission issues. We are gathering a group of helpful students who have been attending Star and are familiar with both NEO and most of our teachers. Ideally, students who aren't certain how a teacher wants something done should ask the teacher, but unfortunately, sometimes students aren't quite comfortable doing this. The mentor program will offer a way for students to stay on top of things as they learn to be their own advocates. It will also offer an opportunity for teachers to ask mentors to assist students with specific NEO issues when difficulties arise. Mentors won't offer help on how to do homework - students have parents and teachers for that, just how to organize and submit it.

We hope these programs will help your students gain the skills they need to succeed both at Star and in their future academic endeavors!
