Course Description: We will be covering arithmetic topics to prepare for algebra such as:
  • Expanding understanding of place value from positive powers of ten to include decimals
  • Fluently adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing multiple digit decimals using place-value strategies
  • Solving real-world problems with decimals and percentages
  • Understanding the metric system and converting from one unit of measure to another
  • Understanding and simplifying exponents
  • Understanding negative numbers and representing them on the coordinate plane
  • Using properties of operations to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions
  • Interpreting and graphing relationships between dependent and independent variables
  • Understanding of plane geometry & geometric symbols

Course Expectations and Grading: There will be weekly math assignments and practice with a weekly test to be completed at home. There are 4 unit tests and a final that are also graded. There is an optional honors program that can be done at the parents’ discretion for extra credit. Students are responsible for keeping up with homework and turning in tests for grading. Ten points will be deducted per week for late assignments unless a parent excuse has been given.

Course Description: Over the coming year we will be introduced to Algebra topics including but not limited to graphing equations and solving equations. There will be a focus on understanding how the math “works.”
Before the school year begins: Please read chapter one before the first day of classes. Also if you are not comfortable with basic arithmetic please do review pages from http://www.math-drills.com/. I really need each student to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide any number they are given (whole, fraction or decimal).
Expectations: Math is a skill, much like playing a sport or a musical instrument. This means that regular practice is required to really make progress. Homework assignments are designed to give you frequent practice on the new skills you are learning and are vital to you being a successful math student. They help you best if you work on homework through the school week rather than attempting to complete all of the work in one day. Weekly online tutoring will be offered one to two times each week and will be required of students having difficulty in the course.
Late and make-up work: Work can be made up when a student is absent, and must be turned in within 2 weeks of the absence. The student is required to obtain notes missed (notes are very important) and find out what assignments are due. Doing work late is bad for your understanding and learning and therefore will be discouraged. Work that is one week late will have 10 points taken off the grade. No work will be accepted more than a week after the due date.
Grading Policy: Students in all classes will receive a grade based on homework, tests, major exams and participation. Attendance, being on time and prepared for class, and asking and answering questions are all part of the participation grade.

Geometry:

Course Description:Over the course of the year we will be covering Calculus topics to prepare for the College Board Calculus AP Exam. This test allows a student to test out of College Calculus. (If a student wants to take the College Board AP Calculus test arrangements and preparation will be taken.) Due to the advanced pace this course will be taking, there will be a virtual class on Friday afternoons.
